He’s called “the world’s premier zydeco showman,” and he’s coming to Everett on Friday evening for a concert not to be missed.
Roy “Chubby” Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band will perform at 8 p.m. July 21 at the Historic Everett Theatre.
An accordion-playing virtuoso, Chubby and his band offer a sound that fuses traditional zydeco with the blues, 1970s funk, and rock and roll.
Born in Louisiana in 1967, Chubby is part of his family’s third generation of zydeco musicians, including his father Roy Carrier, his grandfather Warren Carrier and his cousins Bebe and Calvin Carrier — all are considered legends in zydeco history.
Chubby began his musical career at age 12 playing drums with his father’s band. He picked up the accordion at 15. By 17, Chubby was playing with Terrance Siemien. He toured the world before forming his own band in 1989.
Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band have 10 CDs and perform annually at festivals such as the New Orleans Jazz Fest, the Chicago Blues Fest, Summerfest in Milwaukee, Memphis in May, and several festivals in Europe.
Chubby has done guest appearances on recordings for Tab Benoit, Doug Kershaw, Calvin Owens, 6Was9 and Jimmy Thackery.
Chubby and his band’s release “Zydeco Junkie” won the 2010 Grammy award for Best Zydeco or Cajun album.
