ARLINGTON – Police arrested two 16-year-old boys Saturday afternoon in connection with a cross burning at the home of an Arlington pastor.
“They were identified through our investigation, and they decided to turn themselves in,” said City Administrator Kristin Banfield. “I’m hoping their conscience got the best of them.”
A relative of the boys brought them to the Arlington police station about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, hours before a candlelight vigil and march in downtown Arlington that the community organized in response to the crime.
Pastor Jason Martin and his six children awoke about 2 a.m. Wednesday to the burning cross lying on their lawn. The 3-foot-by-5-foot wooden cross was held together by duct tape, police said.
“We really had a great group from the community who stepped forward with information,” Banfield said, adding, “Our detectives worked this case extremely hard. Our school resource officers from the high school and middle school worked this case hard.”
