KAMPALA, Uganda — A two-story building collapsed in the Ugandan capital today, killing at least five people and leaving dozens trapped under the rubble.
Hundreds of people gathered to watch rescuers sift through the wreckage in search of victims.
Some of those trapped have been in contact with family members by cell phone, raising hopes they can be rescued, said Daniel Okot, the police officer leading the rescue team.
The commercial building in Kampala collapsed when nearby construction loosened the foundation, Okot said.
