Two ideas intended to keep the Boeing Co. and 650 other aerospace-related businesses happy are advancing.
The House Ways and Means Committee on Saturday approved the Washington Council on Aerospace to advise Gov. Chris Gregoire on ways of keeping the state a competitive force in the industry.
The House committee also endorsed creation of the Washington Institute of Aerospace Technology and Advanced Manufacturing at a site to be determined in Snohomish County.
At the outset, Edmonds Community College would run the center which would coordinate statewide efforts at training aerospace workers and uncovering new technologies for the industry.
Republicans and Democrats split on the council proposal. “It is symbolism not substance,” said Rep. Bill Hinkle, R-Cle Elum.
GOP members said they worry Boeing may not be a part of the state’s long-term future unless the Legislature acts this week on certain unemployment insurance and workers compensation bills. They said the council won’t get that done.
There was bipartisan support for the institute. Republicans said it will assist the aerospace industry in a concrete way. > Give us your news tips. > Send us a letter to the editor. > More Herald contact information.Talk to us
