Anacortes couple plead not guilty to neglecting child

MOUNT VERNON — An Anacortes couple accused of keeping a 1-year-old boy in a filthy unheated garage where the couple used heroin pleaded not guilty Thursday to drug and criminal mistreatment charges.

The Skagit Valley Herald reported 39-year-old Sara Margaret Hall-Hillsinger and 33-year-old James Cody Durfee remain in jail awaiting trial.

They were arrested Dec. 7 when officers responded to a report of child abuse and found the boy in a crib in the unheated, detached garage. He was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services and treated at a hospital for a severe diaper rash.
