Marysville teen named Dairy Ambassador

Nicole Buell, of Marysville, representing Snohomish County, is the 2015-16 Washington State Dairy Ambassador. Buell was one of eight finalists at the 60th annual Washington State Dairy Ambassador contest “Diamonds and Tiaras” held June 27 at the Holiday Inn in Everett.

As ambassador, Buell will make more than 400 appearances, at schools, county fairs, Washington Interscholastic Activities Association events and before the Legislature to promote the health and nutrition benefits of dairy products. She also will receive a scholarship.

Olivia Russell, of Stanwood, was a finalist in the contest.

Firefighters, police hit home run for new scholarship

Sky Valley firefighters won the first Sultan Education Foundation Battle of the Badge softball tournament against local off-duty police officers and deputies June 28 at Sultan High School. They will hold onto the trophy and bragging rights, at least until next year’s game.

All money raised by player fees, sponsorships, and concession and T-shirt sales — more than $1,700 — will be applied to a new scholarship for a graduating SHS Turk seeking a career in firefighting or law enforcement.

In addition to several family sponsorships, the Sultan Education Foundation thanked corporate supporters: Rita MacDonald’s Sky Valley Childcare and Preschool, Sultan Volunteer Fire Association District 5, Avery Automotive, Dynamite Diesel, Sultan Education Association, Monroe Parts House (Napa), and Sky Valley Ink.

BBQ honors dads, vets

Almost 100 people came to the Senior Center in Lake Stevens June 19 for an annual barbecue honoring dads and veterans. The event is sponsored each year by County Market and the Kiwanis Club. The event included a short ceremony with U.S. and POW/MIA flags provided by the American Legion Auxiliary. Veterans were given a U.S. flag and were first in line for lunch, followed by all the dads in the group.

CASA fundraiser brings in $4k

A car wash June 20 raised $1,920.18 for the Camano Animal Shelter Association. A pet food drive at the same time raised $688.38 and about $1,585 worth of food. That’s a grand total of $4,193.57.

Many volunteers made the event possible, including shelter volunteers and the Island Baptist youth group, as well as sponsors including IGA grocery and Little Caesars pizza.

Zybas honored for Oso

Snohomish County Public Works Solid Waste Division Director Matt Zybas was given the 2015 Project/Program Manager of the Year Award. The award was presented by the Washington State Association of County Engineers on June 17 in Leavenworth. Zybas was nominated by his county colleagues for his outstanding leadership and service in the emergency response and debris removal following the Highway 530 landslide near Oso.

“It wasn’t just his focus on debris removal and site restoration that impacted the community, but also his effort to be sensitive and respectful of the survivors and community members,” said Steve Thomsen, Snohomish County Public Works director.

Conservation group honors educator, business owner

The Snohomish Conservation District recently honored two people for their service.

Roger Kelley, a longtime environmental educator in Snohomish County, received the Educator Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on programs that reached hundreds of local students, including new lesson plans on ocean acidification and pet waste. Kelley retired from the Snohomish Conservation District in May.

Lorraine “Rainy” MacDuff, owner of Rainy Days Caffe in Lake Stevens, was honored with a Sound Business of the Year award for promoting the “I Love Lake” program with her customers. The stewardship program encourages homeowners to become “lake certified.”

Scouts honored for park additions

Members of Girl Scout Troop 43752 recently completed a volunteer service project at Matt Hirvela Bicentennial Park (4105 222nd St. SW) and were recognized by the Mountlake Terrace City Council at its June 15 meeting.

The troop had met with city staff and selected a project that included raising money to buy a park bench and then install it in the park. The troop also built and installed five birdhouses and a letter box, which is similar to geo-caching, to place in the park.
