Everett: Learn about teaching career at camp

High school and middle school students interested in becoming teachers can register now for a free summer camp that focuses on the profession.

The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 16 to 19 at Everett Community College.

Students in eighth to 12th grade can learn about teaching careers, teaching techniques and more. The registration deadline is July 30.

Lake Stevens: Roads closed for Aquafest

Several roads are scheduled to be closed for the Aquafest celebration from Friday through Sunday.

They are Main Street from the entrance to Jay’s Market to 16th Street NE; 18th Street NE from Main Street to 127th Avenue NE, and 125th Avenue NE from the True Value Hardware driveway to 18th Street NE.

A lane closure (one-way traffic only) is planned for N. Lake Shore Drive from Mitchell Road to 123rd Avenue NE. People who live on these streets may obtain passes from the police department.

Temporary road closures also are planned from 5:50 to 6:30 p.m. Friday from Hartford Drive along Main Street and again from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday for the children’s and grand parades.

Monroe: U.S. 2 safety group meets Monday

The U.S. 2 Safety Coalition plans to discuss fundraising goals and a grant proposal request for a pedestrian bridge in Sultan at its next meeting.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Monday at the Monroe Library, 1070 Village Way.

The coalition advocates for safety improvements along U.S. 2, the site of 54 fatal accidents since 1999 between Snohomish and Stevens Pass.

Olympia: Website for saving the state money

Gov. Chris Gregoire went online Monday in search of ways to save the state money and to see what the public thinks of those ideas.

Her office launched an interactive web page where proposals can be posted and everyone has a chance to say if they agree or disagree with them.

Among the most popular ideas posted Monday was to eliminate meals and light refreshments at meetings. Less popular was the notion of cutting pay of state workers.

Budget director Marty Brown is scheduling forums around the state.

He plans to be at Everett Community College on Wednesday.
