EVERETT — A significant drop in Type O blood supplies has left local hospitals in need of donations.
Bloodworks Northwest saw a 37 percent decrease since the beginning of July, according to a press release.
Type O is the most common blood type among people in the Northwest. It is used for surgeries, trauma care, organ transplants and cancer treatment.
“Inventories of the most-needed blood types and platelets are between critical and emergency levels – only a one- or two-day supply,” said Dr. James AuBuchon, president and CEO of Bloodworks.
It takes about 800 donors a day to supply more than 90 hospitals in Washington, Oregon and Alaska.
People can schedule appointments to give blood at schedule.bloodworksnw.org or 1-800-398-7888.
Donors who give blood between July 10 and Sunday will receive a free voucher for a pint of ice cream at Snoqualmie Ice Cream.
There are donation centers in Everett and Lynnwood.
