Workers are cleaning up water damage at Lynnwood High School after several pipes broke and soaked six classrooms and three offices.
School officials are still trying to determine the cause of the leak at the school that opened in fall 2009, said DJ Jakala, spokeswoman for the Edmonds School District, which includes Lynnwood.
How much it will cost to repair is still being tallied, Jakala said.
The $100 million school is east of I-5 in a residential area just outside Lynnwood city limits.
A custodian discovered standing water Dec. 31. Crews soaked up the water and brought in fans to dry out the building.
One affected classroom is directly above the school’s main office and water seeped down into three offices, including Principal David Golden’s. Sheetrock was removed from floor to ceiling in those offices.
“We had a sopping wet carpet; that’s what it came down to,” Jakala said.
Jakala said a rough estimate of when district crews and the contractor complete their work could be in a couple of weeks. Repairs could take longer though, she warned. By the time school started Monday, there was no longer standing water.
Students who attend classes in the affected rooms were relocated to the school’s library and stage, where sections were partitioned off.
District officials notified parents of the leak Sunday via the district’s voicemail system and cautioned that some students’ classes would be relocated temporarily.
It’s already tough for students to come back from winter break and get back into a schedule, not to mention returning to share space with another class, Jakala said.
“For the kids it’s a little bit of an adjustment,” she said
