As the polls closed on the West Coast, President Bush was hanging on to a slim Electoral lead over Sen. John Kerry in the race for the presidency tonight.
With 53 percent of the precincts reporting nationwide, Bush was leading the Electoral vote 197-188 over Kerry.
It takes 270 Electoral votes to win the presidency.
The Associated Press reported that Bush was leading the popular vote, but it was getting closer – 34,132,840, or 51 percent, to 32,325,778 for Kerry, or 48 percent.
Bush has won 22 states. Kerry has won 12 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush leads in seven other states with a total Electoral vote of 78. Kerry leads in five other states with an Electoral vote of 43.
