TULALIP — A man and two teen-agers were jailed Thursday after they allegedly drove a stolen car to an espresso stand and stole a tip jar with $15 inside it.
The trio didn’t expect citizens to follow them after they left the Native Grounds Coffee Shop stand at 64th Street NW and Marine Drive about 9:15 a.m., Tulalip Tribal Police Chief Jay Goss Jr. said.
The driver, fleeing at a high rate of speed, lost control of the car and crashed into a water-filled ditch on Totem Beach Road at 64th Street NW.
As the three began to run from the car, one of the citizens urged them to wait until police arrived.
The suspects ran past the tribal center and down near the waterfront, he said. Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies and tribal police cordoned off the area while citizens with cell phones helped look for the trio. A tribal patrol boat cruised along the waterfront. The searchers found the three hiding under the Battle Creek Bridge on Totem Beach Road, Goss said.
All three are from Everett, Jorgensen said.
The Chrysler New Yorker had been stolen Wednesday night in Everett, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said.
The 20-year-old man and the boys, 14 and 16, were arrested without incident.
After their arrest, they complained of injuries from the car crash and were taken to Providence Everett Medical Center’s Colby Campus for treatment of minor injuries. The two boys were booked into Denney Juvenile Justice Center, and the man into the Snohomish County Jail on investigation of theft and first-degree possession of stolen property, Jorgensen said. The boys also were booked on outstanding warrants.
Investigators recovered the tip jar and the money, she said.
