PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland’s 33-year-old administrative headquarters will be getting a full-scale renovation that could cost nearly $200 million.
The Oregonian reports that the City Council on Wednesday approved a five-year overhaul of the Portland Building, which will be gutted and rebuilt from the inside. The office building is currently houses some 1,300 city workers.
The 15-story building was designed by architect Michael Graves, who died in March. The Portlandia statue marks its entrance.
City officials say they don’t plan to move Portlandia.
Portland’s chief administrative officer Fred Miller thinks the city can come in a few million dollars below the $195 million cost estimate. He said renovation is less expensive than building a replacement elsewhere or demolishing the current structure.
The city will issue 20-year bonds to pay for the project.
