Birthday
Evelyn Buckley
Evelyn Buckley of Stanwood celebrated her 103rd birthday on Dec. 13.
She was born Dec. 13, 1906, in Outlook in south-central Washington. She now lives at the Warm Beach Retirement Center in Stanwood.
Buckley received her teaching certificate from Bellingham Normal School, her bachelor of arts degree from Western Washington University and her master’s degree in education from the University of Washington when she was in her 30s.
She worked as a remedial reading coordinator for the Shoreline School District. She tested children with learning difficulties, consulted with the parents and teachers then placed the children in special classes. During this time, friends introduced her to the Orton Dyslexic Society. She joined and served as president for two years.
Buckley retired from the Shoreline School District in 1972 but started a tutoring service for dyslexic students in her home for 20 more years.
She was married for 62 years to Merton Buckley, who died in April 1991.
She attributes her long life to her faith in God, the love of family and friends, and years of teaching.
