FERNDALE — Fire officials in the northwest Washington community of Ferndale say a husband and wife in their 60s have been hospitalized after a devastating fire at their home.
The Bellingham Herald reported that Fire District 7 Chief Gary Russell says the home is a total loss.
A granddaughter says Dale Spurrell suffered a heart attack while trying to escape. He was reported in satisfactory condition Monday at a Bellingham hospital. Granddaughter Shilah Morales says Elaine Spurrell was transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and is being treated for second- and third-degree burns to her face, arms and hands.
Both are 67.
The fire started late Sunday night.
Fire Marshal’s Office investigator Mitch Nolze said he believes the flames started outside the house near the front porch.
The couple’s dog was missing Monday. Morales says relatives have found the couple’s cat.
