SEATTLE — A truck wreck on southbound I-5 in north Seattle early Monday went from bad to worse as other vehicles crashed on spilled fuel and commuters backed up for 10 miles trying to drive into the city.
The Transportation Department says by 8 a.m. the Everett-to-Seattle drive took more than two hours and alternate routes on I-405 and Highway 99 had similar jams.
It began about 4:30 a.m. when a semi-truck jackknifed near Northgate and spilled diesel on the roadway. As some cars slid out on the slick roadway another semi hit a concrete barrier.
Wrecks blocked four southbound lanes, leaving only one lane of traffic getting by on the freeway.
