GRANITE FALLS — Authorities recovered the body of a teenager Saturday who fell in the south fork of the Stillaguamish River while hiking in the Granite Falls area.
Around 5 p.m. May 19, the young man, 19, from Lake Stevens was hiking with a group of friends at the Granite Falls Fish Ladder near the Mountain Loop Highway. Witnesses saw him venture out to a rocky area to get a better view of the river, before slipping off the smooth rocks into the water below, according to the Granite Falls Fire Department.
Snohomish County rescue crews responded to the 11600 block of Mountain Loop Highway to search. Operations continued for almost two weeks.
On Saturday, a sheriff’s office helicopter team spotted the body of the man in the river.
Identification of the man, as well as the cause and manner of his death, will be determined by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.
