EVERETT — A man who died in the Snohomish County Jail on Aug. 31 was experiencing “excited delirium,” officials say.
It’s a state of agitation often documented when people die in custody, particularly in cases of mental illness or substance abuse.
Marcus E. Manning, of Everett, was living with bipolar disorder and a heart condition, according to the Snohomish County medical examiner. Other factors in his death included methamphetamine intoxication and a physical struggle with police.
The 35-year-old’s death was ruled an accident.
Manning was arrested by Everett police on suspicion of obstruction and attempting to break into a car. He reportedly struggled with officers.
Manning allegedly continued to resist once in the county jail. On site medical staff tried to calm him in order to monitor his vital signs.
Corrections deputies reportedly shocked Manning with an electronic stun gun. He was placed in a restraint chair when he didn’t comply. He became unresponsive and couldn’t be revived.
