Drinking more than a cup of coffee a day was associated with as much as a 25 percent lower risk of stroke, compared with those who drank less, according to a study reported in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.
Those who drank little or no coffee had an increased risk of strok
e, researchers found.
Groups who reported drinking 1-2 cups per day, 3-4 cups per day or 5 or more cups per day had similar benefits compared with those who reported daily intake of less than a cup of coffee, researchers said.
The study is based on 34,670 women between the ages 49 and 83 who were followed for an average about 10 years.
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. So even small health effects of substances in coffee may have large public health consequences, said Susanna Larsson, lead author of the study, and a researcher at the National Institute of Environmental Medicine in Stockholm, Sweden.
