EVERETT – The man who hit an Everett girl with a car this morning, then carted her away in a failed attempt to take her to a hospital before leaving her at a Shoreline convenience store along Highway 99 has turned himself in.
The hit-and-run suspect, an Everett man, 39, gave himself up just after noon in south Everett, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.
Police were looking for a stolen car connected with the case.
The man was arrested and has refused to talk with detectives about the string of frightening events that began around 8 a.m.
The girl, 9, reportedly was in a crosswalk walking to school near the intersection of Pecks Drive and Cady Road when she was struck, Goetz said.
The driver then took the girl into his car in what witnesses said appeared to be an attempt to drive her to a nearby hospital.
A construction worker in the 5000 block of Evergreen Way told police the man stopped to ask directions to the nearest emergency room. The road flagger went to ask a co-worker for directions. When she returned the man and girl were gone, Goetz said.
The driver apparently couldn’t find an emergency room. He wound up dropping off the girl at a convenience store along Highway 99 near Shoreline where paramedics were called.
“It’s hard to say what was going through this person’s mind,” Goetz said.
Shoreline police were summoned as well as emergency medical officials.
The girl was rushed by ambulance to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of what appear to be non-life threatening injuries, Goetz said. Her parents have been contacted.
Witnesses told police the man was driving a gray or silver Dodge Charger with Washington plates including the number “500.”
