EVERETT — City workers Monday will begin installing signs that allow for passenger loading and unloading in several spots near the Everett Events Center.
The spaces give drivers up to 10 minutes to drop off or pick up events center patrons, including people with disabilities who may need time to get in and out of vehicles.
The passenger loading spaces will be new, but drivers have been able to use the bus stop in front of the events center’s main entrance for loading and unloading, as long as it doesn’t interfere with bus traffic, said Wayne Wentz, Everett’s traffic engineer.
Earlier this month, the city limited parking to 10 minutes between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. for two spots on Oakes Avenue and spots on Hewitt Avenue so events center patrons could buy advance tickets at the box office. Those four spots will become passenger loading spots from 5 to 11 p.m.
In addition, three spaces on Hewitt that have 90-minute parking during the day will become passenger loading spaces after 5 p.m.
There’s already a load zone with space for two cars on Broadway in front of the entrance for the community ice rink.
In addition to increasing loading options, the city is establishing a taxi stand on Oakes Avenue with space for three cabs. Patrons who use cabs must now call a taxi company and scout for the arriving cab in the crowded post-event streets, Wentz said.
