EVERETT — A woman who twice stole a Ford Mustang from a man she met online is off to drug treatment instead of prison.
Ashley Dawson, 19, will spend up to a six months inside a rehabilitation facility to treat an addiction to methamphetamine. She also will be under state supervision for two years.
Dawson pleaded guilty in February to two counts of theft of a motor vehicle. A judge on Monday agreed to give Dawson an alternative sentence to address her drug addiction.
Dawson was arrested in December after she was seen parking a stolen Mustang outside a Snohomish County restaurant. The car’s owner told investigators he met Dawson through MySpace. He invited her home and they decided to take a shower together. The man got in the shower first and Dawson told him she’d join him in a few minutes, court papers said.
The man waited for a few minutes and then realized that Dawson was gone and so was his laptop, wallet, car keys, cellphone and Mustang.
The car was found a day later in Grays Harbor County. The keys were missing.
The Mustang was stolen a second time in December. Later that night Dawson was seen driving the car.
Dawson told a judge Monday that she wants to beat her addiction. She is tired of hurting her family and herself.
Superior Court Judge Thomas Wynne told Dawson that if she doesn’t stick to treatment this time she faces prison.
