Dust settles after big storm in south-central Arizona

MESA, Ariz. — The dust has settled in Arizona for now, leaving behind just a few sprinkles of rain and light breezes.

Forecasters in Phoenix said there was some possibility Saturday of shifting winds, but not like the dust storm that knocked out power and grounded flights out of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport on Friday.

The rolling wall of dust started in southern Pinal County and moved northwest through Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert.

Wind gusts of up to 60 mph were reported, and television footage showed mangled awnings on some mobile homes in Florence along with some uprooted trees in the city south of Phoenix.

Gateway Airport officials said flight operations were back to normal by Friday afternoon, and things remained quiet Saturday morning.
