Jacob Metz of Edmonds had just one hour Saturday to make his breakfast sausage roll-ups for the judges.
His family was not allowed to help. But one person was assigned to help him use the stove.
Nine-year-old Jacob was competing against 19 kids from three states in his age division at the Albertson’s/Pillsbury Kids’ Bake Off at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. The contestants were selected at random after mailing in their recipes.
Jacob made eight of his culinary creations using crescent roll dough, precooked sausage, cheese slices and scrambled eggs. As he worked, he worried that the dough was too flaky.
The judges took the food entries behind black curtains. When they later emerged, an Eatonville boy and his Pinch Me Cake were awarded the top prize of a $2,500 U.S. savings bond.
Jacob took the loss in stride.
"It was fun. It went good," he said.
All participants received a $50 savings bond.
But the Metz family did win something else at the Bake Off.
Jacob’s 5-year-old sister Jaclyn had the winning number in a raffle for a 4-foot-tall stuffed Pillsbury Dough Boy doll.
Their mother, Julie Metz, said it was "unfortunate" because now they have to figure out where to store the giant pastry icon.
As for Jacob, he reported that he’s now ready to give up cooking.
"It’s not my favorite thing to do," he confided. "I like baseball, too."
And Little League season is just around the corner.
