EDMONDS — The election of former City Council member Strom Peterson to the Legislature has left an opening on the seven-member council.
Anyone interested in running for the Position 2 seat must apply by Feb. 2.
“I’ve heard the names of several good candidates who were considering applying,” Mayor Dave Earling said. “I think that’s very important because the council has a lot of issues in front of it.”
All council members serve at-large and are paid a base salary of $1,000 a month for meetings that are held Tuesday evenings.
Candidates must be registered to vote within the city and have been a resident for at least a year.
Whoever is appointed will serve until the November general election.
The application asks candidates to answer questions on their previous volunteer experience; whether they’ve held elected office before or been appointed to public boards or commissions; three personal strengths and weaknesses; their top priorities for the city; the council’s role, and the council’s greatest challenge.
The last time the council appointed a council member followed the resignation of council member Frank Yamamoto in 2013.
Peterson was appointed to the City Council in January 2009 and elected to two more terms. His last day as a council member was Jan. 6.
