STANWOOD — If you see a big commotion near the railroad tracks in downtown Stanwood this weekend, look carefully before dialing 911.
A large-scale firefighting and law enforcement training exercise is set for 8 or 9 a.m. to 1 or 2 p.m. today and Sunday east of the Amtrak passenger station.
Drivers on 271st Street NW between Florence Road and Pioneer Highway could face traffic-control crews. People are likely to see many fire and emergency medical services vehicles and equipment in the area.
“Our biggest concern is that people are going to think something terrible is going on,” Stanwood Police Chief Ty Trenary said. “This is only a training exercise.”
Stanwood-Camano Fire and Stanwood Police departments have been working with Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Amtrak in preparation for the training exercises.
The training events involve passenger train cars positioned on a rail spur across from the Amtrak platform.
The training will provide an opportunity for emergency crews to work with rail equipment. Emergency crews are set to learn about special safety requirements and the organization needed for accidents that could involve trains.
Several other emergency departments from the area also are scheduled to be involved in the exercise.
Freight and passenger train service will not be interrupted during the training. No sirens and no hazardous materials will be used, officials said.
