PORTLAND, Ore. – The Everett AquaSox literally threw one away Friday night at Civic Stadium.
A costly error in the bottom of the eighth inning led to the game-winning run for the Portland Rockies in a 1-0 victory over the Aquasox in a Northwest League game.
With one out in the eighth, Portland’s Clint Barmes grounded to Everett shortstop Guillermo Martinez. Martinez’s throw to first sailed into the dugout for an error, allowing Barmes to reach second. Jamie Rock followed with a single to score Barmes with the game’s only run.
The loss was the second in a row for Everett (11-7). Portland is 10-7.
For the second night in a row, the Everett offense was nearly non-existent, mustering just three hits.
Pitching has been the only consistency in the first two games of this five-game series. Portland starter Scott Dohmann held Everett to one hit and struck out seven in four scoreless innings.
The Portland bullpen stifled the AquaSox’s bats as well. Sam Goure pitched two innings and allowed one hit with a walk and a strikeout. Roger Little followed with 11/3 innings of one-hit ball. Justin Huisman threw the final 2/3 innings for the Rockies and picked up the win.
Everett pitcher Sam Walton had his best start of the season with six innings of scoreless ball, allowing four hits and striking out eight.
Matt Sachse took the loss for Everett.
Matt Carroll was 2-for-3 with a double for the AquaSox, who were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
