Q: Would the state Department of Transportation paint a yield sign on the road where U.S. 2 and Everett Avenue merge and then connect to northbound I-5?
Nearly every day I witness a near accident. The drivers of cars coming up the hill from Everett Avenue fail to yield to those of us coming from the Hewitt Trestle.

A: Everett Avenue on-ramp traffic is required to yield to U.S. 2 traffic, said Dongho Chang, a Snohomish-area Department of Transportation traffic engineer.
"A painted yield sign is not allowed under the national signing and pavement marking guidelines," Chang explains.
However, a symbol that looks like a yield triangle spelling out the word "yield" on the pavement is allowed, both of which "we will look at installing," Chang said.
The transportation department also may install meters at the intersection if use of the ramp continues to grow. About 15,000 cars use the ramp each day now, with slightly more than half coming from U.S. 2.
