EVERETT — City officials recognized a Sedro-Woolley teenager and emergency room nurses at a council meeting Wednesday for their efforts to rescue a child from drowning in Silver Lake in July.
At the meeting, Everett Fire Department Chief Dave DeMarco presented a citizen life-saving award to 13-year-old Gauge Bryant and three nurses: Pam, Jennifer and Jacqueline, all who declined to share their last names.
On July 8, Gauge heard from community members while on a dock at Silver Lake that a child couldn’t be accounted for. When people called for help, Gague dove into the water multiple times to find the 11-year-old boy. A fellow swimmer lent him goggles for help.
He wrapped his arm around the boy and brought him to the surface, where bystanders were able to lift him onto the dock, Gauge told The Herald in July. The three nurses at the lake, along with another woman who wasn’t present at the council meeting Wednesday, performed CPR on the 11-year-old along with other community members.
The child, who had been underwater between four to six minutes, spent days in the hospital and has made a full recovery, DeMarco said Wednesday. The 11-year-old attended the council meeting where Gauge and the nurses were recognized.
None of the people who rescued the boy sought recognition, DeMarco said, but hoped to raise awareness of the importance of water safety and the value of learning skills like CPR.
“The Everett Fire Department proudly recognizes the community members who played a crucial role in the successful outcome of this incident,” DeMarco said. “Their quick and decisive actions during a time of crisis demonstrates the power of coming together.”
