These people were honored during the Everett Police Department’s annual awards ceremony Wednesday:
Sgt. Mark Thacker was named supervisor of the year for improving the operations of the financial crime unit.
Officer Raymond Neibert was named officer of the year for his outstanding abilities to teach and lead.
Police specialist Debra Richardson was named civilian employee of the year for her work supporting the major crimes unit and the Snohomish County Multi Agency Response Team.
Chet Brown was named volunteer of the year. Brown worked 263 hours in 2007 and was recognized for his reliability and friendly attitude.
Officer Eddie Golden received the Brian DiBucci Award for his energy and positive approach toward police work.
Medals of valor were given to Sgt. John DeRousse and officer Kelly Carman for arresting a man after a police pursuit that wound through Everett and ended with gunfire at the Everett Mall and at a grocery store.
Officer Michael Braley was given a medal of valor for helping to rescue fellow officer Suzanne Eviston when she was severely injured by a fleeing burglary suspect.
Officer Suzanne Eviston was awarded the purple heart for sustaining injuries while in the line of duty. Eviston suffered multiple broken bones and other injuries when a suspect crashed a Jeep into her patrol car.
Certificates of merit were given to officers Kelly Carman, Brian Nelson, Greg Sutherland, Jeff Maynard and Joe Woods and detectives Chris Roberts and Sally VanBeek. A letter of commendation was given to officer Robert Marshall.
Citizen commendations were given to Gil Bodrack, Dan Davis, Chris Dennis, Chad Lisendy, Glenda Paluka and Jamey Woodard. They all are security guards at Providence Everett Medical Center and helped police during a bomb threat.
A citizen commendation was given to Tim Brydges, a computer programmer with the city of Everett, who helped rewrite the Registered Sex Offender database, allowing officers to access it wirelessly.
A citizen commendation was given to Garrett Dodge, an Evergreen Middle School student who helped police recover a stolen vehicle by writing down a license plate number when he saw suspicious activity.
Citizen commendations were given to Kris Hunter, Bradley Palitz, Alexander Wilkinson and Anthony Wilkinson. The group saw a man steal a woman’s handbag and chased down the suspect, helping to return the stolen property.
A citizen commendation was given to Becky Larson, who called 911 when she saw suspicious activity across the street from her work. The call helped arrest a burglar.
A citizen commendation was given to Laverne Pease, who called police when he found a toddler alone on 112th Street SE wearing a T-shirt, jeans and no shoes in freezing temperatures. Pease cared for the child until help arrived.
A citizen commendation was given to Robert Spurgeon who helped police catch a man who was running away from officers.
Certificates of appreciation were given to the following volunteers who clocked a total of 3,188 hours last year: Carol Arjona, Ove Bergan, Chet Brown, Ken Clafin, Marvel Cummings, Clyde Gardner, Heather Hanson, Gene Hasson, Kal Leichtman, Marion Lockleer, Charles Moore, Dick Puckett, Bill Searcy, Neal Shannon, Vi Shannon, Ed Slagle, Margo Spencer, Fran Taralli and Sam Taralli.
