Two former editors of the Everett High School student newspaper, The Kodak, have won a national award for their defense of press freedom.
Now in college, Claire Lueneburg and Sara Eccleston will receive the 2006 Courage in Student Journalism Award in Nashville, Tenn., at a national student journalism conference Nov. 11.
They will share a $5,000 prize.
The award is presented by the Newseum, the Student Press Law Center and the National Scholastic Press Association.
In 2005, Lueneburg and Eccleston began their senior year as returning co-editors of The Kodak. A conflict arose soon after the start of the school year, when the new principal required the students to submit The Kodak for review before it went to press, citing a district policy.
The student editors resisted, claiming there had been no such review for at least 17 years.
The dispute ended up in U.S. District Court in Seattle. A trial is set to begin in May.
