TACOMA — The Pierce County planning department is using an eye in the sky to find buildings erected without a permit.
Aerial photos have identified more than 3,200 illegal buildings.
The News Tribune of Tacoma reports most are garages and sheds, but 18 are houses or other significant buildings.
Planning Department assistant director Gordon Aleshire told the County Council Community Development Committee on Monday that photos prompted more than 700 property owners to apply for an amnesty program. It’s expected to bring the county $310,000 in revenue this year.
Council member Roger Bush said he’s troubled by the “big brother” style surveillance.
