FEDERAL WAY — Federal Way would like to bring a branch campus of Washington State University to south King County, about 10 miles from the University of Washington’s Tacoma campus.
Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell told The News Tribune he thinks bringing WSU to his city could be transformative.
He’s also talking to Eastern Washington University and Gonzaga University about opening a campus, but says discussions with WSU have gone the furthest.
WSU President Elson Floyd visited the city to meet with Ferrell. So has his successor, interim President Daniel Bernardo.
Federal Way recently commissioned a $75,000 study to determine whether there is enough demand to support a campus in the city of 92,700 people.
A WSU official confirmed the school has talked with city leaders, but said everything is still preliminary.
