Camano seeks firefighters
Camano Island needs more volunteer firefighters.
Camano Island Assistant Fire Chief Levon Yengoyan said that most of the country is protected by volunteer firefighters. The island was served by all volunteers until the district hired its first paid firefighter in 1991. Now 35 volunteers work alongside the 50 full- and part-time firefighters.
For new volunteers, training includes 140 hours of firefighting, hazardous materials, first aid and CPR training, and another 120 hours to become emergency medical technicians.
In a recent survey of Camano’s volunteers, “service to the community” was overwhelmingly the primary reason people serve as volunteer firefighters.

Food drive in Darrington: Newly formed Darrington Boy Scout Troop 47 is conducting a food and paper-products drive through Dec. 20 to benefit area food banks.
Donations can be dropped off at the IGA grocery, Coastal Community Bank, Bank of America and Cascade Senior Center.
The troop also offers Christmas tree pick-up and recycling Jan. 1 within the Darrington city limits.

Food bank needs help: Stanwood Camano Food Bank is looking for three volunteers to work from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursdays.
Job duties include lifting, sorting and possible food pick up.
Apply at the Stanwood Camano Food Bank from 10 to 11:45 a.m. or 1 to 3:15 p.m. Wednesdays or Fridays.
