Tips for young hikers
Hiking is fun, but inexperienced hikers, especially teens, are most at risk for injury, even death. Teens can enter a digital media contest to help raise awareness about hiking safety and win a backpack filled with the hiking “Ten Essentials.”
Submit a link to your entry by Sept. 30 at tinyurl.com/WTAhikesafe. The entry can be a photo, video, sound clip or animation about teens and hiking safety.
Safe Kids Snohomish County along with the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest Service and Washington Trails Association are sponsoring the contest.

More rock blasting on I-90: Extended closures next week mean drivers need to plan ahead and add two or more hours to their travel time.
The state Department of Transportation and contractor crews plan to close I-90 in both directions starting at 7:30 p.m., Monday and Wednesday. Traffic will be stopped eastbound at Gold Creek (milepost 56) and westbound at Price Creek (milepost 61) and at Easton (milepost 70). A reopening time depends on the amount of debris that comes down and the stability of the slope.
The closures planned for Tuesday and Thursday are scheduled for one hour from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
