Reserve your picnicEdmonds Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services will begin taking reservations for picnic shelters for 2014 at 9 a.m. Feb. 3.
Shelters can be rented from April 1 to Sept. 30. The cost per shelter is $110, and the gazebo is $55 per reservation. The ball fields can be reserved for a maximum of three hours; current rates are $10 per hour for Edmonds residents and $12 per hour for non residents.
Reservations can be made in person at the recreation office at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St. Phone reservations can be made beginning at 9 a.m. Feb. 4 by calling 425-771-0230.
Free smoke alarms in Lake Stevens: Snohomish County Fire District 8 in Lake Stevens is offering free smoke-alarm installations and home safety checks, provided through a grant.

Be a mentor for at-risk youth: Attend the Snohomish County Mentors’ Conference on Jan. 31. The conference is part of the county’s Reclaiming Futures program and will include workshops about engaging young people in positive activities. Snohomish County Executive John Lovick will speak. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. at the New Life Center, 6830 Highland Drive, Everett. The cost is $10, with lunch included.
