Underage agents buy smokes, booze

During November and December, investigative aides, who are ages 17 to 20, with the Washington State Liquor Control Board, attempted to buy liquor and cigarettes at dozens of businesses. Most refused sales, but some sold to minors.

Liquor enforcement officers may issue administrative violation notices, fines or temporary license suspensions. People who sell alcohol to someone younger than 21 can also receive a misdemeanor criminal citation.

Aides must present their true identification if asked by a clerk. However, they may attempt to be evasive if asked their age but not asked for their identification.

If you believe a business in your community is selling alcohol or tobacco to minors, please call 888-838-3956 to report your suspicions.
