Fly the flag on Labor Day

In honor of Labor Day, the Flag Manufacturers Association of America is encouraging citizens to fly the flag today as a sign of pride in country.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City through the efforts of the Central Labor Union.

Two years later, the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday and the union urged similar organizations in other cities to celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday.”

On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.
