Memorial set for J.J. Harvey

A memorial service for J.J. Harvey, a former Snohomish County sheriff, state trooper and U.S. marshal, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2301 Hoyt Ave., Everett.

Harvey, a longtime Arlington resident, died Wednesday after undergoing surgery. He was 84.

As a U.S. marshal, Harvey was credited with leading the investigation that captured escaped spy Christopher Boyce in 1981.

Go red with heart group

The American Heart Association will offer a program called “Go Red Heart Checkup” with free screenings to help identify risk factors for heart diseases in participants.

The event is planned for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Everett Mall, 1402 SE Everett Mall Way, Everett.

Other supporters include Everett Community College, Premera Blue Cross, Macy’s and an endowment from the late Kosher brothers of Snohomish County.

Cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke, are the No. 1 killer of American women older than 25. Cardiovascular diseases kill about 1,000 women in Snohomish County every year. Most forms of cardiovascular diseases are preventable.

The check-up includes blood pressure, body mass index, blood glucose and family history evaluations, free Red Dress pins, health information and giveaways.

Kids locked in on Friday night

Edmonds Church of God, 8224 220th St. SW, Edmonds, hosts a “superheroes lock-in event” from 7 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday for youth in grades six to 12.

Activities include music by Seattle Pacific University’s Unlimited Praise Band, a message from guest speaker Bill Hogg and chances to play video games. Also planned are a trip to Jet City Comedy Club for a viewing of “Twisted Flicks” and roller skating fun at Lynnwood Rollaway.
