ASTORIA, Ore. — Georgia-Pacific has donated 682 acres of swamp land to The Nature Conservancy. The move helps preserve a major part of a Sitka spruce swamp east of Astoria.
The land near G-P’s Wauna mill is important habitat for salmon, birds and other wildlife. It’s bordered on three sides by Columbia River tidal sloughs and channels and adjoins the Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge.
When James River owned the property, it donated a conservation easement on the land in 1992.
Georgia-Pacific bought the mill area in 2000.
