OLYMPIA — More than a dozen people opposing Gov. Jay Inlee’s proposed carbon rules say they’ll be fasting for the next three days ahead of a public hearing on the matter.
The group gathered on the Capitol steps Tuesday, and said they’ll fast until Thursday evening, when there’s a Department of Ecology public hearing on the updated plan to limit greenhouse gas emissions from large polluters. They argued the proposed rule doesn’t require enough emissions reductions and disregards current science.
Under the proposed rule, expected to be finalized in late summer, large emitters would be required to reduce carbon emissions by an average of 1.7 percent a year.
The rule would initially apply to about two dozen oil refineries, power plants and others that release at least 100,000 metric tons of carbon a year.
