EVERETT — A 19-year-old man was shot in the head Tuesday afternoon just south of Everett.
Deputies detained a person in connection with the shooting, said Courtney O’Keefe, a spokeswoman for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
Gunfire prompted 911 calls shortly before 1 p.m. Police converged on the Brisa apartments in the 12400 block of Admiralty Way.
Nearby roads were blocked by sheriff’s deputies carrying rifles. Within minutes, the person was detained at an apartment building two blocks away, O’Keefe said. A firearm was recovered by deputies.
A large slice of the parking lot at the Brisa apartments was cordoned with yellow crime scene tape as detectives investigated.
The injured man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He was alive as of Tuesday evening, according to the sheriff’s office.
Police have responded to dozens of shootings this year in Everett. Many have involved teens, and most of those have been tied, in some way, to warring gangs. And many have been in south Everett.
A shoot-out south of Casino Road ended with the arrest of two young men, ages 18 and 21, in August.
Three shootings in two days in September left two teens with serious injuries.
Earlier in October, police arrested a 13-year-old boy following a shooting that killed Mariner High School student David Sandoval-Hilarios. David was 14.
The stretch of Highway 99 near the scene of Tuesday’s shooting has been plagued by drug-fueled crime for decades.
Sitting on a railing outside of a leasing office, Nizar Ali, 46, and Mahamat Hissein, 43, said they’ve often seen telltale signs of drug dealing — cars stopping, people getting in for a moment, then leaving — in the two years they’ve lived at the Brisa apartments.
People in the neighborhood are tired of the crime that comes with the drugs. Ali is gone part of the year, fishing in the Bering Sea. But he recalls three shootings in and around the complex since 2015.
“I hope this is the last one this year,” he said. “No more.”
