PORT ORCHARD — A court hearing Tuesday in Port Orchard may determine whether assault charges will stand against the adults prosecutors blame for a school shooting that nearly killed a Bremerton girl.
Lawyers for the mother of the boy who brought the gun to school and her boyfriend who owns the gun are asking that charges be dismissed
Kitsap County prosecutors said the couple caused the shooting through the negligence of leaving the handgun where the boy could pick it up. He put it in his backpack, and it went off Feb. 22, critically wounding Amina Kocer-Bowman.
The Kitsap Sun reported that the lawyer for the mother, Jamie Chaffin, will argue the case should be moved to Mason County.
The lawyer for her boyfriend, Douglas Bauer, said he didn’t cause the shooting.
