SHINE — Fair weather has helped contractors on the Hood Canal floating bridge move ahead of schedule.
Transportation Department spokeswoman Becky Hixson says the bridge should reopen to traffic in the first week of June.
The bridge closed May 1 for a six-week, $500 million project to replace the east half and update parts of the west side.
The west half of the bridge failed and sank on Feb. 13, 1979, during a storm carrying wind gusts of 120 mph and sustained winds of 85 mph, according to the DOT Web site. The west half was rebuilt and opened to traffic in October 1982.
