Much of the snow that fell around the region Thursday melted shortly after the sun broke through the clouds. But more problems were expected this morning, when freezing overnight temperatures were predicted to turn roads into sheets of ice.
“The roads will be icy if they’re still wet when it goes below freezing,” said Carl Cerniglia, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle.
Temperatures were expected to drop to about 25 degrees overnight.
State Department of Transportation crews prepared for the freezing temperatures by applying de-icer to area roads Thursday, transportation spokeswoman Aurora Jones said.
Weather experts say it will get warmer today and climb back into the lower 50s over the weekend.
Up in Darrington, where people are still driving around big piles of snowy muck left over from December’s storm, very little snow was added this week.
“We just got a little skiff. Nothing to shout about,” town administrator Lyla Boyd said. “It covered up some of the dirt in those big piles and dusted the trees, so we look a little more presentable.”
