CALDWELL — State health officials are heightening warnings of a parasite-caused illness in southern Idaho, saying more cases are being reported.
Officials say nearly 30 cases of cryptosporidiosis, known as “crypto,” have been reported in Canyon County since August, which is roughly ten times the average number for this time of year. State health workers reported cases in Gooding, Lincoln, and Twin Falls counties earlier this month.
The parasite cryptosporidium can live in human and animal digestive tracts and can spread through swimming pools and other recreational water sites that are contaminated with human or animal waste. People usually contract the illness by swallowing contaminated water.
In addition to diarrhea, symptoms can include vomiting, weight loss and a low-grade fever.
