Dreams of a white Christmas in Snohomish County look like they might come true.
Flurries are forecast to fall throughout Snohomish County this morning, Christmas Day, National Weather Service in Seattle officials said.
“It will probably start as wet snow,” meteorologist Dennis D’Amico said. “You should see some wet snow stick around into the afternoon or early evening.”
There’s not much chance for accumulation in the lowlands, he said. A trace of snow might stick in some of the higher hills.
It’s only snowed on Christmas four times in Everett in the past 66 years the weather service has tracked, D’Amico said.
Snow likely will start mid-to-late morning, he said. By late afternoon, snow levels are expected to rise to about 1,000 feet.
“It’s going to be tough to get anything to stick,” he said.
It will be a different story at Stevens Pass. As much as 11 inches may fall at the pass Christmas night, D’Amico said.
On Monday, state Department of Transportation officials required traction tires to drive over the pass. Drivers are encouraged to check pass conditions before they set out.
Snow showers are also expected in Snohomish County on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Still, Bing Crosby’s vision of snow on Christmas may come true this year.
There may not be enough to make a snowman or even a snow angel, but it still is likely to make a nice photograph.
“People like to see a white covering on the ground,” D’Amico said. “But if you can have snowflakes falling in the air and traffic’s not too bad, that’s also a good solution.”
And as always, forecasts in Puget Sound can change quickly, he said.
“Anytime we’re talking about snow in the lowlands, it’s a tricky scenario,” D’Amico said.
