JAKARTA, Indonesia – A Boeing 737-300 jetliner made an emergency landing on a river on the main island of Java during a heavy rainstorm Wednesday, police and airline officials said.
Police said only three out of the 54 passengers and crew aboard the Garuda Indonesia plane were seriously injured when it came down on the Benjawang Solo River, 300 miles east of Jakarta.
The plane had been on a flight from the tourist island of Lombok to the city of Yogyakarta, about 14 miles west of the crash site.
An airline official said it was not known what went wrong on flight GA-421.
A statement from Garuda said all on board had been taken to hospitals in the nearby city of Solo.
It said the crash happened as the plane was 20 minutes away from landing.
