Kayla McArthur, Scriber Lake High School
Good evening. My name is Kayla, and i have been attending Scriber Lake since April of 2015, my sophomore year, so a little over 2 years. I will be attending Edmonds Community College in the fall, and then transferring to Washington State University to earn my bachelors degree in Education, with a minor in Early Childhood Development.
When I transferred to Scriber, I was struggling with depression and anxiety. I couldn’t find the motivation to go to school anymore, and i needed somewhere that was going to support me and my education. I quickly realized how much the teachers at scriber genuinely cared about the success of the students, instead of just the test scores they got. I felt like they wanted me to succeed. I was lucky enough to make relationships with teachers, and students that i know i will keep for the rest of my life. For example, Sarah and Marjie never gave up on me, no matter how difficult I was or how many classes I skipped, they just continued to push me over the finish line. I found it was easy for me to trust them with my struggles, and trust wasn’t an easy thing for me to do.
As I look around, i see a room of people who started in high school as kids, and are sitting here as adults. But how do we measure the time we spent here? To begin, we started by measuring by class periods and counting down the days until graduation. Then we counted down the semester, and eventually the hours and down to the very minutes, that we had left of walking these hallways. We counted down the times we would see the teachers who we loved and cared for. We counted down the times we saw our friends everyday. We counted down the time that we turned in papers and got them back. We started as the scared freshman and we ended as the kids who ruled the school.
We put in the hours of work, and the time and commitment. We earned this. This is our moment.
As Doctor Seuss once wrote,
“You’re off to great places, today is your day. Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way.”
And so… the adventure begins…
Thank You.
