Keith Higman is the new director for the Island County Health Department.
Higman, 45, was hired following the resignation of Tim McDonald, who accepted a job as director of communicable disease control for the Snohomish Health District.
Higman has been with the Island County Health Department for 14 years, most recently working as the environmental health director.
As the population of Island County grows, the public health issues faced by the health department become more complex and finding funding to provide services will a challenge, Higman said.
A member of the state Board of Health, Higman earned an environmental studies degree at Western Washington University and a master’s degree in public health from the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of Washington.
Higman was appointed to his new post this week by the Island County Commissioners.
