LAKE STEVENS — The color purple is starting to take over parts of downtown.
Painted purple windows, streamers and other decorations are being put up outside businesses in support of a fundraiser Saturday at North Cove Park, behind City Hall.
The Paint the Town Purple celebration is to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, said Kim Demary, chairwoman of the first Relay for Life of Lake Stevens event in May.
“The whole town will pretty much be totally decked out in purple,” she said. “I’m amazed at what’s been done already.”
At least 70 businesses have agreed to “go purple” for the event, Demary said.
Paint the Town Purple is scheduled to begin with a Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. Arts and crafts booths are set to be in the Lake Stevens Family Center beginning at 10 a.m. at 1803 123rd Drive NE.
Registration for the Purple Siege, a citywide scavenger hunt, is planned from 7 to 8:30 a.m. with the hunt starting at 9 a.m. The cost to take part in the scavenger hunt is $15.
A Battle of the Bands competition is scheduled at 1 p.m. on the North Cove stage. Musicians pay $15 to be part of the competition and can register through Friday by emailing macchedester@gmail.com.
All proceeds from the event will go toward Relay for Life. The inaugural Relay for Life of Lake Stevens is scheduled May 14-15 at Lake Stevens High School. So far, 501 people and 61 teams are registered for the event, Demary said. Participants have raised $43,000 so far towards their goal of $250,000.
“I don’t think that (goal) is impossible,” Demary said.
Mayor Vern Little on March 28 proclaimed Saturday as “Relay for Life, Paint the Town Purple Day.” Residents and merchants are on board to make sure the event is a success, Demary said.
“It’s amazing,” she said. “I can’t even believe how this town has come behind what the mayor and I wanted.”
